Artist Statement

I have had an interest in death and the treatment of the body for as long as I can remember. After the loss of my sister; the subject became increasingly more poignant subject for me. I began to explore the meaning of preserving the body. I am fascinated by Egyptian mummification processes, and the rich history of ancient civilizations treatment of their dead. I try to ask many questions with my work, what relationship do we choose to maintain with the body of our deceased? In death and preservation practices, does the body become more important than the soul? Does the body need to remain, in order to stay connected to our loved ones? The wrapping the body with fabric in ritual ways can evoke powerful emotion, and symbolism. This is why I have included it in my work, as a surface treatment on my figures. During our life time we will all struggle to understand the inevitability of death. I hope to evoke thought, and consideration, for the fragility of life and one’s own mortality with my work.
